Super League squad news: Wigan star set for spell on sidelines, new signings lined up for debut

Squad news for Friday night’s three Super League games have been confirmed, with some surprise omissions and players set for debuts.

Here’s a rundown of all the big news ahead of these Round 14 fixtures.

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Castleford will be hoping to make the most of their rest as they take on new Challenge Cup winners Wigan Warriors at Wheldon Road.

Two big names are out of the squad as leading duo Paul McShane and Joe Westerman will not be in action after not being named in the 21-man squad.

However, just after being announced on an initial two-week loan deal from Huddersfield Giants, prop Matty English is in the squad and could play his first professional club game for a team other than the Giants.

Samy Kibula also moves into the squad in the only other change since last time.

Meanwhile, Wigan play their first game since becoming the third team in the Super League era to hold all four major trophies at the same time.

There is just one change from the squad named for the Challenge Cup final as defender Jai Field drops out, replaced by Jack Farrimond.

Field appears set for a potentially extended spell on the sidelines, with head coach Matt Peet stating, “Jai has a hamstring pull that requires a scan, so we’re waiting for more information there.”

Hull KR v Huddersfield Giants

Elsewhere, a packed Craven Park will be entertained by Hull KR and Huddersfield Giants as the Robins look to take advantage of an out-of-form Giants side who have just one win in their last seven games.

Willie Peters also makes just one change, while young academy graduate center Louix Gorman moves back into the side, replacing Connor Barley.

They are essentially full strength for this one and will be hoping to lift another two points towards the top of the table.

The Giants have lost 24-12 in the reverse game this season and have to come into this season as underdogs.

To try and go against the script, they named a strong team – again, it’s just a change.

Leroy Cudjoe misses out with a ‘minor injury’ meaning Adam Milner is in the squad for this one.

Warrington Wolves v Salford Red Devils

The other fixture on Friday night promises to be an interesting one as Warrington Wolves, off the back of a Wembley defeat, look to avenge those demons.

Jordan Crowther and Lachlan Fitzgibbon miss out with ankle and back injuries respectively after taking knocks in the Challenge Cup final.

As a result, Arron Lindop and Tom Whitehead move into the 21-man squad.

Salford Red Devils, meanwhile, will be hoping to win it and have named a strong squad.

New signing Loghan Lewis, a loose forward from the NRL’s Canberra Raiders, could make his debut, while Harvey Wilson could also make his first appearance.

Nene Macdonald is back in the squad after a knee injury kept him out of their last game, but Ryan Brierley is still recovering from a shoulder injury and misses out.
