New high-speed electric vehicle charging stations to open in Maine

Maine (WABI) – A new initiative is making high-speed charging for electric vehicles more affordable and available across the state.

Governor Mills announced Wednesday that 17 new high-speed electric vehicle charging stations will open in Maine over the next year as part of the state’s commitment to building an accessible and reliable network of electric vehicle chargers for residents and visitors.

The new charging sites, which will include 52 new chargers, will serve travelers on highways and busy roads such as Interstate 95 (I-95), US Route 2, US Route 302, areas of Portland and Bangor, and supports outdoor recreation and university communities.

The total investment in the charging infrastructure is almost 8.6 million USD.

The charging funding includes $5.7 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, an initiative of the bipartisan Infrastructure Act, and $2.8 million through the Maine Governor’s Jobs and Recovery Plan and funds from settlement from the New England Clean Energy Connect project.

“Drivers in Maine and across the country are increasingly choosing electric vehicles because they’re safe, reliable and better for our environment.” said Governor Janet Mills. “That means Maine needs to have a robust charging infrastructure to make sure you can get there from here. These investments from President Biden’s bipartisan Infrastructure Act and my Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan will further expand access to high-speed chargers across the state, making long-distance travel more reliable for both commuters and visitors.”
