Liverpool have a double Jeremie Frimpong transfer advantage with Celtic clause explained

A move for Jeremie Frimpong could benefit Liverpool in more ways than one if Arne Slot’s side can strike a deal this summer.

It has been suggested in Germany that the Reds are one of the European clubs chasing the right-back and are looking to take advantage of his soon-to-expire £35million release clause.

Frimpong played a starring role as Bayer Leverkusen went unbeaten to win the Bundesliga for the first time in their history, finishing the season with a remarkable 17 points over second-placed Stuttgart and 18 over Bayern Munich.

Capable of operating on the right side of defense as well as in midfield, Slot’s attacking style of play would likely bring out the best from a player who chipped in with 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions this term last.

And it seems the 23-year-old himself would be open to an Anfield switch, having made his feelings about a potential move clear when speaking to Ziggo Sport earlier this year. “Liverpool? Big club, with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring,” he said.

Starting his career at Manchester City, Frimpong was sold to Celtic in 2019 after failing to make a first-team appearance for Pep Guardiola’s men. After two seasons in Scotland, the Amsterdam-born star has accepted a new challenge in Germany. If another transfer is pending this summer, Celtic will benefit in the same way City did in 2021 after negotiating a 30% sell-on clause when they sold to the Scottish giants.

It is understood that Celtic, these days managed by former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, will receive 30% of any profit made by the Netherlands international if Leverkusen cash in on one of their prized assets. So what exactly does this mean for Liverpool?

Celtic are believed to be one of the clubs eyeing a deal for Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who is expected to move on in the coming weeks as he looks for a No.1 role elsewhere. Liverpool rejected a £15m bid for Kelleher in January and value him at almost double that.

Such a fee could prove problematic for the Hoops, whose club record outlay stands at £9m, although they would be in a position to earn around £7m if Frimpong’s release clause is triggered during the transfer window. That capital could later be used for an ambitious move for Kelleher, who is resigned to being stuck behind Alisson Becker in the goalkeeping pecking order.
