The manager explains that he replaced Manchester United’s ace at half-time in the pre-Euro friendly

We’re at that stage of the calendar, with Euro 2024 starting in 48 hours, where footballers across the continent are wrapping themselves in cotton wool.

One innocuous hit, a freak accident, a muscle drop and your tournament hopes could be gone like a snap of Thanos’ fingers.

Just ask Czech Republic midfielder Michel Sadilek, who will now have to watch from home after falling off his bike. Poland took no chances with Karol Swidiersky either, substituting the forward after just 12 minutes against Turkey after he appeared to injure himself in the resulting celebration.

And with one of Manchester United’s eight Germany targets failing to reappear for the second half on Tuesday night, those stuck in the stands and left to speculate without access to Google’s font of knowledge may have feared what’s worse.

Portugal boss allays Diogo Dalot’s fears ahead of Euro 2024

Fortunately, Portugal boss Roberto Martinez confirmed after Portugal’s 3-0 thrashing of the Republic of Ireland that Diogo Dalot’s sending off was not due to injury, but instead a pre-planned move by a manager looking to keep his awfully well-balanced squad fresh.

“The plan was (that) Pepe, Diogo Dalot, Joao Cancelo, Rafael Leao and Joao Felix went at half-time,” Martinez tells O Jogo, with Wolves winger Nelson Semedo coming on for Man United’s £19m pounds after interval. .

Dalot has played in each of Portugal’s last four internationals and all three pre-tournament friendlies in June. Man United’s Player of the Year looks well placed to start when one of the Euro 2016 winners kicks off their campaign against the Czech Republic on Tuesday night.

While Dalot played just 45 minutes against an Ireland side under the interim control of The red devils hero John O’Shea, Man United stars past and present made the difference again. There was another assist for the irrepressible Bruno Fernandes, setting up Joao Felix’s opener.

Cristiano Ronaldo then rolled back the years with a pair of typically emphatic strikes, including a cut-inside-and-whack that would not have looked good during his glorious time at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Big connection with Manchester United in the Portugal team

Dalot will be hoping for a few moments of his titles this summer. The former FC Porto whizz is certainly heading to Germany in good form.

“For me, Diogo Dalot is a player of great consistency,” legendary Man United full-back Patrice Evra tells O Jogo. “What I love most about watching him play is the energy he puts on the court. He always wants to get on the field and never gives up.

“And that’s why, in my opinion, he’s been Manchester United’s most consistent player this season.

“Even in games where the team didn’t do so well, he always showed his quality,” added Evra. “He has incredible physical strength and is not afraid to take on (meeting forwards) one-on-one or even in two-on-one situations. He always accepts the challenge.

“For me, those are the fundamental characteristics that a full-back should have. In addition, Diogo is a very good person and a humble boy.”

Interestingly, The Athletic reported today – following confirmation that Erik ten Hag will stay on as manager – that Man United have included Roberto Martinez on their initial managerial shortlist.
