A boy’s skull was visible through a three-inch gash after his head was split open in a horror playground accident.

A wooden frame at the Goose Green playground in East Dulwich, south London, snapped in two and the equipment collapsed on Friday.

One horrified mum said: “I was talking to another mum and I looked around and saw loads of children and play equipment on the floor. The children ran away in tears and I saw my son with another parent and he was bleeding.”

She added that she could see her child’s skull through a three-inch gash, My London reports. She added: “I want you to make sure the playgrounds are managed properly… they use wood but if they can’t afford to manage that they should use steel.”

A spokesman for Southwark London Borough Council said: “An investigation is underway to ensure that all council-maintained play equipment is safe across the borough.”

A spokesman for the London-based children’s charity said Southwark News: “Councils have no legal obligation to provide play, so when looking for savings, the provision of play is an ‘easy’ target. In these times of continued austerity, Southwark Council is not alone in struggling to balance its budgets and pushing play down the list of priorities.”
