Daniel Farke has shown Leeds United the tactical change that could ease transfer pressure

It may have been ‘only’ against the British Virgin Islands, but Junior Firpo has a new role at international level – and it’s one that Leeds United boss Daniel Farke will no doubt have taken to knowledge

The left-back from the Dominican Republic ended the season strongly for the Whites, contributing eight assists from the left flank as Leeds missed out on a Premier League place. The 27-year-old is out of contract next summer, which has led to some speculation over his future.

Leeds wouldn’t want to risk losing him for nothing in 12 months, so there are some reports that they could decide to cash in on him in the transfer window. However, Farke is well aware of Firpo’s contribution to his team both defensively and in attack, and with right-back already a problematic position, he may not want to have to find two full-backs in this summer.

Firpo made just his fourth appearance for the Dominican Republic this week, having chosen to represent the country after four caps for Spain at Under-21 level. He played the full 90 minutes of their 4-0 win over the British Virgin Islands – but the position he occupied was very different at club level.

He was used as one of two support strikers behind leader Dorny Romero, setting up the striker’s fourth goal. Farke used Georginio Rutter in this role last season and Brenden Aaronson is now back in the squad for next campaign.

Whether he would be open to using Firpo’s undoubted creative talents in that role is open to speculation, but with the futures of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto in doubt, a 4-3-2-1 formation could be suitable if in which Leeds would find two. wings down. Perhaps we shouldn’t expect to see Firpo in a No. 10 role any time soon, but it’s certainly food for thought for the Leeds boss.
