‘Fantastic’ Leeds United player has offers to leave Elland Road this summer but Daniel Farke wants to keep him

Daniel Farke is the driving force behind Leeds United looking to keep hold of one of their fringe players this summer.

Once the craziness of last summer calmed down, Farke found a fairly stable group of starters during his first season in charge, and as such, minutes were tough for many players.

Charlie Cresswell, Joe Gelhardt, Mateo Joseph and Jamie Shackleton are just some of the younger players in the squad who are likely to have been unhappy during the game.

Cresswell has already been linked with a £3million move to a European side, while it would not be a surprise if Gelhardt was also looking for an exit. Their last league starts came in August.

On the other hand, it is likely that Joseph will be given a more prominent role next season after coming off the bench several times with success. He is the type of player Leeds can build their team around.

What is Jamie Shackleton’s position on signing a new deal at Leeds

Leeds confirmed their retained list towards the end of last week and there have certainly been some interesting decisions along the way.

Sam Byram was perhaps the most unsurprising as the number of appearances he made triggered another one-year extension, which is a good deal provided they don’t rely on him too much.

On his return from his loan spell at Birmingham City, Cody Drameh was a shock name to see new terms on offer. However, this was done to ensure Leeds received compensation when joining a new club.

And the other two surprises on the list were that both Liam Cooper and Shackleton are in talks for new deals despite their lack of starts last season.

It seemed certain that Cooper would move, but his future is now up in the air again. According to the Athletic, meanwhile, Farke is the driving force behind Shackleton being offered a new contract.

Shackleton played just 676 minutes of league action last season, with his last start coming back in October. Injuries really hampered the second half of his campaign.

However, Shackleton is yet to sign anything to stay at Leeds as he also has offers elsewhere, although at what level remains to be seen.

According to the report, Shackleton is keen to get more minutes next season and surely if Leeds are looking at another promotion he will have to go elsewhere.

Ross McCormack hailed Shackleton as “fantastic” last season

Despite the way his season ended, Shackleton enjoyed a real renaissance in the first two months of 2023/24.

He started a number of games at both left-back and right-back, earning much praise from Farke for his displays as well as former striker Ross McCormack.

One of his best displays came in the 3-0 win over Watford in September, where McCormack hailed his performance as “fantastic”.

“Yeah, you see that with a lot of teams these days, it’s a big part of how teams want to play, it’s how they use their full-backs. And I thought he (Shackleton) and Byram today were fantastic,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.
