Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl reveals whether Hansi Flick wanted him as Barcelona’s No.2

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has revealed whether or not Hansi Flick wanted him at Barcelona.

Sheffield Wednesday handed Danny Rohl his first managerial role last year, hiring him in October 2023 when the club were winless in the Championship.

Rohl eventually led the Owls to 20th place in the Championship, garnering huge praise for his work and admiration from rival clubs as well.

Hull City and Sunderland were both linked with Rohl. But Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri quickly worked out a new deal for Rohl, offering him a three-year deal.

Rohl, 35, is the youngest manager in the English Football League. He made his name working under Hansi Flick, being his number 2 at Bayern Munich and the German national team.

Rohl also has previous experience working with Red Bull Leipzig and Southampton, although he learned his trade under Flick.

Flick attended a Sheffield Wednesday game under Rohl last season, watching the Owls beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 at Hillsborough.

Danny Rohl discusses Hansi Flick Barcelona rumours

When Flick took over at Barcelona in May, there was speculation, mainly on social media, that Flick could be looking to reunite with Rohl at Camp Nou.

Asked whether or not he had been approached by Flick to join him at Barcelona, Rohl said on the Training Ground Guru podcast: “Not this year.

“I think there were some rumors three years ago about this step as well. There was no question of joining him.

“But I think now I’m starting my own career as a manager. I am starting my own journey. It was very clear to me that I wanted to stay and I wanted to improve as a manager.

“I wish Hansi all the best. We are still in touch.”

Danny Rohl has just dropped a transfer hint from Sheffield Wednesday

It always seemed unlikely that Rohl would give up what he had already built at Sheffield Wednesday to become assistant manager again, albeit at a huge club like Barcelona.

But as soon as Flick arrived at Barcelona, many Sheffield Wednesday fans online speculated about the possibility of Flick lending Rohl some youngsters during the summer transfer window.

The fact that Rohl is still in contact with Flick may suggest that this is possible and could be great for the Owls.

Given that Flick and Rohl have worked closely together, and that Rohl has undoubtedly learned much of what he knows from Flick, the new Barca coach may entrust some of his younger players to play and train under Rohl next season.

Flick will know that these youngsters will train and play in a similar style to what he wants at Barcelona and so it might make sense to give Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday a couple of players on loan.

That would be something for later, though, when Barca will be doing the bulk of their summer transfer business.
