The video shows the aftermath of a horror hit-and-run after a drunk driver went the wrong way on the motorway

Police have released a video showing the shocking aftermath of a horrific crash involving a disqualified drink-drive driver. Shane Mackay drove his van on a dual carriageway in the wrong direction, leading to the incident.

Mackay, 36, was jailed and disqualified from driving after driving the wrong way on the A3 at more than twice the alcohol and drug limits. Shortly before 2.15am on Sunday 18 December 2022, officers were alerted that a van driving northbound on the A3 southbound at Thursley, Surrey, narrowly missing oncoming vehicles .




As police attended the scene, the van was involved in a three-vehicle collision just outside Guildford, causing substantial wreckage to be strewn across the road. The occupants of the other vehicles were lucky to be able to get out of their cars before police arrived and received medical treatment at the scene.

The driver of the van, Mackay, from Farnham, was found lying in the front seat of the van, conscious but smelling of alcohol and slurring his speech. He was cut from the car and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

After refusing to provide a roadside breath specimen, Mackay was arrested and his blood was tested instead. He was found to be driving while two-and-a-half times the drug limit and more than two times the drink-drive limit, with his blood reading 172 milligrams of alcohol, while the legal limit is 80 milligrams .

Officers were also able to use DNA to place Mackay in the driver’s seat at the time of the collision. After initially pleading not guilty, he later changed this to a guilty plea and received a 16-month prison sentence for dangerous driving at Guildford Crown Court on Thursday, May 2.


He was also sentenced to 13 weeks for drug driving and disqualified from driving for four years (51 months). After this disqualification period has passed, he will be required to take a new extended test if he wishes to obtain a new driver’s license. PS Dan Ayrton of Surrey Roads Policing Unit said: “This case shows the shocking reality of what can happen if you choose to get behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs.

“When you see the wreckage of the vehicles involved, it’s fortunate that no one was killed or seriously injured in this case. Drink and drug driving will not be tolerated on Surrey’s roads and you should expect to pay the maximum penalty if caught.
