Spikes put on swings by ‘desperate’ residents knocked down as council issues warning

Problems with birds tangling on swings at a Bedworth playground have prompted one resident to take matters into his own hands. The seats on the swings in the Ironbridge Way play area had become a magnet for the birds to poo.

Such was the condition of the poo-plastered rocking chairs that unsuspecting residents of the area decided to take action. They installed spikes at the top of the swing frame to prevent birds from sitting on them.

This was in an attempt to stop the bird mess falling on the rocker seats. However, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council have now removed the spikes after flagging them during a routine safety inspection.

The city hall also replaced the seats of the rocking chairs. A post on the council’s Facebook page explained: “The rocking chairs at the Ironbridge Way play area in Bedworth have been replaced because the birds were making a mess of them.

“Neighbourhood play areas are part of a regular cycle of health and safety inspection and cleaning and users should not attempt to make changes to the parks themselves.”
