Leeds rapist Siyabonga Dunga behind bars for drugs and kidnapping

A man described as a “dangerous predator” has been jailed for 18 years after he got a woman drunk, dragged her into his hotel room and raped her.

Siyabonga Dunga, of Sweet Street, Holbeck, Leeds, gave his victim drink and then forced her to return to his hotel room in January 2023.

Dunga, 39, was jailed at Leeds Crown Court today after being convicted of rape, kidnapping and administering a substance with intent. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison and must sign the sex offenders’ register for life. He was brought to justice following an investigation by British Transport Police.

The court heard how in the early hours of Saturday January 21, 2023, Dunga gave the woman a drink at the Back Room Bar in Leeds and shortly afterwards she became disoriented and confused. Under the pretense of coming to her aid, Dunga helped the woman outside to get some air and, in an attempt to separate her from her friend, asked her friend to return to the club, telling her that the woman had left the phone inside.

He actually had the woman’s phone in his pocket. While the friend was inside looking for the phone, Dunga took the woman, who could not walk on her own, back to a nearby hotel.

CCTV from the hotel shows the woman collapsed and unresponsive as Dunga dragged her back to his room where he committed the rape. Investigating officer Det Con Andy Jones said: “Dunga is a dangerous and calculating sexual predator who is thankfully no longer on the streets.

“By her own admission, the woman remained a shell of her former self. Her last memory is of being in the club and telling her friend she wanted to go home before waking up in a hotel room with Dunga.

“I commend her courage and strength throughout the investigation – she supported us every step of the way, despite struggling with the trauma she still endures. She remained adamant that this should not happen to anyone.

“The events of that night continue to haunt her and it is hoped that now that Dunga is behind bars where he belongs, it will in some small way help her get her life back together.

“We take all reports of sex crimes seriously and I hope this sends a strong message to offenders that we will do everything in our power to ensure justice is served.”
