Highlights: Kim Mitchell to headline Cornwall’s Canada Day celebrations

The Cornwall Canada Day Committee has announced its headline act and other entertainment content for this year’s activities.

Renowned Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell will headline the day’s entertainment, taking to the band stage in Lamoureux Park at 8.45pm, with his set ending just in time for the scheduled 10pm fireworks start Mitchell sold over 1.5. million records throughout his multi-decade career, earning 17 Juno Award nominations. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021.

Mitchell’s hits are a Canadian soundscape of the 1980s and 1990s, such as Patio Lanterns, Rock N Roll Duty, Easy to Tame, Go for a Soda and I am a Wild Party. He last performed in the bandshell in 2011 as part of the Cornwall Lift-Off.

Other acts on the schedule include Hoople Creek, Love & Boots, Mason Bruyere, Shake the Tree and Brothers Unplugged. The day begins with the opening of the children’s area at 11am, with a bouncy town and other activities, followed by an official opening ceremony at 12pm. various points in the city.

This year’s Canada Day Committee is led by a group of nine volunteers. While the City of Cornwall is a sponsor alongside the Devcore Group and the Optimist Club of Cornwall, the day is organized and run by the volunteer committee.

New President/CEO

St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. has a new president and CEO following the retirement of Terence Bowles, who had held the role since November 2010.

The SLSMC Board announced that Vice President of Engineering and Technology, Jim Athanasiou, has been promoted to President and CEO effective June 12. Athanasiou joined Seaway in 2008 as corporate manager of mechanical engineering and has since assumed increasing levels of responsibility.

Bowles’ 14-year run at the helm of the Canadian crown corporation that manages the St. Lawrence included various changes to update and modernize operations, the most significant of which was the introduction of hands-free docking and remote operations, which was the biggest change to how the system operates since it opened in 1959.

WILLIAMSTOWN — The McKay family has donated 36 hectares (89 acres) of their land in South Glengarry to the Raisin Region Conservation Authority.

The donation was recognized by the RRCA earlier this month as Don McKay joined the RRCA board members as its CEO. The property is donated by Don McKay, Kitty Lewis, Rob McKay and Ian McKay. The land adjoins publicly owned land and will contribute to the conservation of a corridor identified as central in the 2021 natural heritage study completed by the area’s conservation authorities.

The family is donating the land through the Canadian Green Gift Program; RRCA noted that this is the first donation received under this program.

WINCHESTER — The Great River Doc recruitment drive led by SDG and the Great River Ontario Health Team has landed another medical professional for a local clinic.

SDG announced Thursday that nurse practitioner Christina Mercier is the second of five recipients of the recruitment program after choosing to join the Rideau-St. Lawrence Family Health Team. She will receive $5,000 in the program as a result of signing an employment contract there.

After completing post-secondary education and working as a researcher at a hospital, Mercier returned to school to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and earn her Registered Nurse status.

The Rideau-St. Lawrence Family Health Team is based in Winchester and works with three other organizations and eight affiliated clinics to provide primary care with affiliated clinics in Avonmore, Winchester, Morrisburg, Ingleside and Osgoode.
