Three Leeds players do not have active loan clauses and will not have an exit from Elland Road this season

Brenden Aaronson’s decision to return to Leeds United has already set the tone for a potentially interesting summer in terms of the loan army.

Following relegation just over a year ago, Leeds lost eight members of their first team on loan as a result of clauses being inserted into contracts by the previous ownership.

Over the past 12 months, only Luis Sinisterra and Robin Koch have managed to agree permanent moves elsewhere, leaving the futures of six other players uncertain.

However, Aaronson moved quickly to put to bed any speculation over his future, agreeing to give him a second trial at Elland Road after talks with Daniel Farke.

Aaronson actually had the option to leave on loan for a second time but is determined to return to Leeds and form a key part of their promotion push next season.

Reports updates on Max Wober, Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente

Only two players from that group of returning loanees are believed to have the option to go out on loan again, one of which is clearly Aaronson.

Jack Harrison is believed to be the other, with a second temporary spell at Everton on the cards.

Reports in the Spanish media have indicated that Marc Roca will rejoin Real Betis on loan and it will be interesting to see if this is the case. Betis’ sporting director has confirmed that a deal is 99% done, but in what capacity remains to be seen.

That leaves just Max Wober, Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente, and according to Leeds Live, none of those players have a clause in that contract that would allow them to go out on loan again.

Wober enjoyed a good season on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, but unfortunately they cannot meet Leeds’ asking price for a permanent deal at this stage.

The Austria international has already admitted he doesn’t know what his future holds this summer and it will be interesting to see if other clubs come for him or if he stays at Leeds.

Kristensen and Llorente, meanwhile, were both together at AS Roma last term. The Serie A giants are still considering whether to sign a permanent deal for the latter, but the former will not be returning.

Graham Smyth shares how Leeds felt about Kristensen’s departure

Some of those loan departures certainly left a more bitter taste in the mouth than others, and according to Graham Smyth, Kristensen was one of them.

Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘Inside Elland Road’ podcast, Leeds had expected Kristensen to stay and were therefore left disappointed by his decision to leave.

Whether that plays a part in Leeds’ desire to welcome him back this summer remains to be seen.

He said: “From what I was led to believe, there were players that Leeds felt would stay. They would be willing to fight and he left. They thought Kristensen would stay,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s his fault, a miscommunication or Leeds misinterpreted the situation. But it was definitely a bit of a shock. It was a surprise and a disappointment for Leeds when he went to Rome.”
