Matheus Cunha teases Manchester United move after answering direct transfer question

Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha has given an update on his future amid links to Manchester United.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after a string of impressive performances for Wolves last season. Cunha scored 12 Premier League goals in 32 games for Gary O’Neil’s side, finishing as the club’s top scorer.

Earlier in the window, The Mirror reported that United scouts had been keeping tabs on Cunha throughout the 2023/24 campaign. Erik ten Hag has only one recognized striker in Rasmus Hojlund and is expected to prioritize a new striker this summer.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to be willing to double Cunha’s £60,000-a-week wages at Molineux in his bid to sign the 25-year-old. Fortunately for United, Wolves are one of the many teams who could be forced to sell players to avoid PSR breaches, and Cunha could be one of their assets allowed to leave.

Cunha, who surprisingly missed out on a place in Brazil’s Copa America squad, is currently enjoying the summer ahead of pre-season. And since then a video has emerged online of him being asked if he will join United with friends.

After saying his friend should be “political”, Cunha said: “You know it’s a real honor to have your name linked to Manchester United. One of the biggest clubs in the world.

“But I’m happy at Wolves. If I’m lucky, I’ll have another good season, but the window is open, you never know.”

It is not the first time that Cunha has been asked about his future since the end of the season. During a visit to Brazil to watch local team Botafogo-PB, he said: “Whenever I can, I come (to Botafogo-PB matches).

“I always want to show that (the affection) is mutual. Then we see that (Manchester United) talk. But I’m very happy at Wolves.

“My focus is to rest and make the most of my time with my family. I am very happy at Wolves. The focus now is to have better seasons and help the club. God willing, I will continue on this path.”
