A family-run pub in Clifton Wood is closing but could be bought by the local community

A family-run pub in Bristol could be bought by the local community after the current owners announced they would close the pub under their management. The Lion Tavern, on Church Lane in Clifton Wood announced the “sad” news on Tuesday.

Owners Fiona, David, Andrea and all staff posted a message on the pub’s social media and said: “It is with the greatest sadness that we can confirm the closure of The Lion in Clifton Wood – at least under our management. I’ve had almost 16 fantastic years at the helm of this wonderful, wonderful pub.

“We have made lasting friendships and have been lucky enough to be right at the center of this fabulous community. The lion and his community have grown with us over the years and we were privileged to see many of the youngsters running around town. like when we arrived, sitting behind the bar of their place.”

The team went on to say: “Everyone who has worked with us – thank you so much – you have been amazing and each one of you has contributed to the warmth, character and color of the pub. We’ve had so many people help us over the years – often giving up their free time.

“The loyalty and friendship of all our customers, both local and regular, has been a constant support and we can’t thank you enough for that. We have been so very lucky indeed.”

In the announcement, the team revealed that the community is currently running an initiative to buy the Lion “to preserve it as both a pub and a community asset”, sharing a link for anyone hoping to get involved and adding: “It has recently been secured officially as an asset of community value, so it’s heading in the right direction.”
