Ariana DeBose teases her ‘James Bond’ song for Argylle

Ariana DeBose has opened up about her ‘dream’ James Bond-style singing for spy comedy Argylle.

The Oscar-winning actress and West Side Story star stars as Keira in Matthew Vaughn’s action film. Before the film’s release, DeBose sat down with The digital spy to look back at how the two songs he plays for Argylle came about.

“The movie was in post and I had won my Oscar at the time, and Matthew (Vaughn) called and said, ‘I think we need to do something else, do you want to play music?’ and I said, “Yeah, why not!” So ‘Electric Energy’ with Boy George and ‘Get Up and Start Again’ came to life,” she explained.

Speaking about “Get up and Start Again” in particular, DeBose said it “feels like one of those Bond credits.”

“I’m living my Adele, Celine Dion, Skyfall dreams. I’ve just always wanted to do something like this. I never thought I’d get the chance and I hope people like it,” she continued.

Argylle had quite a long run, as it was filmed in 2021 — right after DeBose, who is a Tony-nominated stage actress, won popular recognition for her role as Anita in that big-screen version of West Side Story year.

DeBose, who recently cracked a joke at the Critics Choice Awards questioning her singing abilities, recalled the audition for Argylle, calling Vaughn “a visionary.”

“It really reminds me of how grateful I am for Matthew Vaughn. He saw my tape, I auditioned, I think there’s this big myth that I don’t audition anymore, I still do. I ended up auditioning for him and he saw it and he didn’t really know about West Side Story, he just loved what I did,” she said.

“Honestly, I’m holding on to it because I think once your life changes like that, it can be new and strange, it’s a strange experience, but this is a man who didn’t care what I had already done.”

DeBose continued, “He just liked what was in front of them and said, ‘Let’s try something new. Let’s go for it.” It is an honor to collaborate with someone who is a visionary.

“He has the whole movie in mind, from the soundtrack to the opening frame to the end credits.”

Argylle will be released in UK cinemas on February 1 and in US cinemas on February 2. It will later air globally on Apple TV+.
