‘No doubt’… Joe Crann gives his verdict on the Sheffield Wednesday player’s exit rumours

A Sheffield Wednesday player has rejected a new contract offer, with Championship clubs interested.

After a successful 2023/24 season in which the Owls miraculously stayed in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday have managed to tie down fan favorites Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer to contracts for the next campaign.

A number of key players whose existing contracts were due to expire this summer have been offered new deals, as announced in the retained list.

Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has undoubtedly been a big factor in current players committing to the club after 20th place.

However, it now looks like Josh Windass may leave as a free agent this summer.

Joe Crann reacts to Josh Windass’ exit request at Sheffield Wednesday

Windass, 30, is out of contract at the end of this month. But recent reports have revealed that talks between Windass and Sheffield Wednesday have progressed nicely.

Windass was thought to extend his stay at Hillsborough after his goals in the final three games of the 2023/24 Championship campaign helped the Owls beat the drop.

But an emerging report on Friday claimed that Windass has since rejected Sheffield Wednesday’s final contract offer and now looks set to leave the club as a free agent this summer.

Windass have Championship contenders with Coventry City and Hull City believed to be at the front of the race.

Giving his verdict on Windass’ possible exit from Sheffield Wednesday this summer, journalist Joe Crann posted on X:

Sheffield Wednesday will miss Josh Windass

Since his arrival in South Yorkshire in the summer of 2020 from Wigan, Windass has been crucial in getting the Owls back into the Championship, particularly during the 2022/23 League One campaign which saw the 30-year-old score at the death. to beat Barnsley in the play-off final.

In that pivotal season, he managed to record an impressive 18 contributions despite his injury struggles.

When he’s in top form, Windass has the ability to be a top striker in the Championship, something that could be irreplaceable for Sheffield Wednesday.

Off the pitch it is also apparent that the Hull forward is a key figure in the dressing room and will be a massive miss.

Since Rohl took over on Wednesday, he has been able to right the wrongs of Xisco Munoz’s tenure, finishing 9th if only considering the games since he took over.

The business end of the season also saw Windass pip the Owls over the line with a goal in each of their final three games of the season, which saw Wednesday win them all on the spin and finish three points above the drop.

The Owls will be looking to build on that momentum and look towards the play-offs, and losing such a valuable player could be detrimental to their plans. Windass going to a rival top-six push side would be heartbreaking for all Wednesday fans, especially on a free game.
