Coventry dad kills woman near Birmingham Airport in Audi crash

A father-of-six from Coventry who killed a woman while traveling at 115mph on the M42 has been jailed. Mohammed Asif crashed his Audi into the back of a Škoda, which was just minutes from Birmingham Airport.

Asif, 47, passed a vehicle in the Audi Q7 and then crashed into the back of a Škoda which was about to exit onto the J6 in Solihull, jurors were told. The victim, Marzena Kaczorowska, was a passenger in the damaged vehicle, which went out of control and hit the center barrier, reports BirminghamLive.

Ms Kaczorowska remained in intensive care for two weeks before dying from severe chest and head injuries. She had headed to Birmingham Airport in the early hours of September 3, 2022, ahead of her 6.30am flight to her native Poland, to be reunited with family she had not seen for a year, Birmingham Crown heard Court.

Asif, of Prince of Wales Road in Coventry, had simply been walking home and was apparently in no hurry, Birmingham Crown Court heard. He admitted causing death by driving yesterday (Thursday June 13) and was jailed for nine years and banned from driving for 10 years.

Partner Wlodzimierz Najmul said he had been with Kaczorowska for more than 21 years and they enjoyed traveling together, Birmingham Crown Court heard. He described how proud the 53-year-old was of her garden and how they were both “huge” Aston Villa fans, adding that he is now “extremely lonely”, struggling financially and feels he just exists.

Mr Najmul said: “On the day of the collision I was taking Marzena to Birmingham Airport to see family in Poland, which was extremely exciting for her. He hadn’t seen them in a year and they missed each other very much. Seeing her family brought a lot of happiness.”

He continued: “It is a journey that has changed my life forever. Out of nowhere, we were hit by a speeding car, the medical staff worked hard to stabilize Marzena in hospital for 14 days before her body could no longer fight. Her injuries were too bad.

“I was there to watch her die as her life support was turned off. No one should see this.”

Asif had been out with a friend that day and was going to spend the night with her before she became unwell and he took her home to Birmingham. He was returning to his home in Coventry when the fatal crash happened at around 2.50am.

Birmingham Crown Court was shown dashcam footage from a vehicle on the M42 which captured Asif overtaking it at 115mph. Moments later, the man repeatedly exclaimed, “Oh shit,” as he witnessed the collision and debris strewn across the road.

Asif crashed into the Škoda carrying Ms Kaczorowska and his Audi overturned and ended up on its roof, Birmingham Crown Court heard. Prosecutor Tom Walkling said Asif had shown a “callous disregard for the safety of others”, adding that he had “failed to learn any lessons” as he described a drink-driving offense on March 12, 2023.

Asif crashed his BMW into two parked cars and was found slumped in a seat holding the car keys, Birmingham Crown Court heard. It later gave readings of 106 and 98 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath against the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

He also had 17 previous convictions for a total of 40 offences, including a six-year prison sentence for conspiracy to manufacture drugs. Antonie Muller’s defense lawyer said Asif “wrestled” with why he accelerated at such a speed as he had “limited memory” of what happened.

Mr Muller suggested Asif could have been torn between trying to overtake two HGVs in front of the Škoda to get out and onto the J6, braking suddenly to get behind them, Birmingham Crown Court heard. He said: “His fault is that he gave himself very little time to make his decision because of the speed at which he was travelling.”
