3 reasons why ‘unbelievable’ player could want to sign for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have agreed to sign a defender after beating European clubs to his signature.

Sheffield Wednesday have already been busy in the off-season, tying down their most prized asset in Danny Rohl, who will continue in his role in S6 following the Owls’ miraculous Championship survival.

Key dressing room figures Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have also been signed to new deals to push Sheffield Wednesday into the upper echelons of the table next season.

Defensive options are far from rife for the Owls, with Marvin Johnson the only player of note following the departure of Reece James.

That means that position had to be backed up by Championship quality, which Rohl undoubtedly did after it was revealed that Sheffield Wednesday had agreed a fee for Yan Valery.

He looks set to become one of the Owls’ first signings of the summer and here we explore why he’s moving to S6…

Yan Valery will reunite with Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday

The German manager worked wonders last campaign with a very unfamiliar side when he took over from Xisco Munoz. With his former players, he could turn this team around to make the playoffs.

Rohl spent time with Valery during his time at Southampton, showing that Rohl could get the best out of the French-born player.

Rohl’s appointment to the Premier League squad coincided with Valery’s first-team drop, becoming a regular at both full-back and right-midfield for Southampton.

When former Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl’s assistant, the Austrian coach was full of praise for Valery, saying: “How he developed his game today was incredible for me, the best player in my team I think.”

Yan Valery has a point to prove

Valery has struggled to top his outstanding season with Southampton under Rohl following the 2018/19 season in which he struggled to nail down a starting spot.

Ever since his time on the south coast of England, he has been plying his trade in France with Angers.

He joined the Ligue 1 side in the 2022/23 season but has since been relegated and had a season in Ligue 2 where he collected an impressive five assists.

The Tunisian international’s firepower is evident from his time in the Premier League, it is up to the right manager to reignite that spark, the Sheffield Wednesday boss can be that man.

A perfect piece in Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday XI

Standard Liege and Montpellier were also reported to be interested in Valery, but a place in Rohl’s plans took priority for the full-back.

Although incredibly versatile, with the ability to play anywhere on the right as well as centre-back, the position he thrives in is full-back.

A player of Valery’s ilk could transform the right side for Sheffield Wednesday, forming a partnership between himself and Djeidi Gassama, who were instrumental in helping the Owls to safety.

Valery will be given the freedom to attack down the right while maintaining a defensive shape with the back three providing cover.
