The signing of a free agent at Sheffield Wednesday is now “imminent”, says Joe Crann

The arrival of a free agent at Sheffield Wednesday is now “imminent”.

Sheffield Wednesday are poised to complete their first signing of the summer, with Danny Rohl poised to land the first permanent signing across the line.

Rohl guided the Owls to Championship safety last season before being rewarded with a new three-year deal to keep him at Hillsborough until 2027.

Since then, Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a number of potential signings with the Owls likely to probe the free agent market.

Contracts officially end on June 30, with the summer transfer window now officially open, meaning teams can really start getting their summer transfers over the line.

Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a deal for Yan Valery at Angers, while Sheffield United full-back Max Lowe looks set to sign on a free transfer when his contract with the Blades expires this summer.

But it is goalkeeper Ben Hamer who looks set to become Sheffield Wednesday’s first signing of the summer.

Ben Hamer signs for Sheffield Wednesday now ‘imminent’

Hamer, 36, is a free agent after being let go from Watford at the end of last season.

He was then tipped to join Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer, leading to the news that Cameron Dawson is set to leave the club as a free agent this summer.

Hamer, who previously played under Owls assistant manager Chris Powell at Charlton Athletic, looks set to play at number two next season and Sheffield Wednesday are keen to re-sign James Beadle on loan from Brighton.

Posting on X, journalist Joe Crann revealed that Hamer’s “move is now imminent”, with the Englishman set to become Sheffield Wednesday’s first signing of the summer.

Chris Powell could repeat Ben Hamer’s trick at Sheffield Wednesday

Powell is an experienced football coach and someone who probably boasts a long and varied list of contacts having worked with the likes of England, Tottenham Hotspur and beyond.

Powell spoke highly of Hamer during his time at Charlton Athletic, where he won promotion from League One in 2012.

It’s safe to assume Powell gave Rohl a good reference on Hamer, and that’s something we might see more of this summer.

Having Powell in place may mean that Sheffield Wednesday have a link with certain clubs and certain players, and after last season’s success, Powell will certainly recommend Sheffield Wednesday to any interested player.

Hamer’s arrival looks set to spark a busy summer transfer window for the Owls, who look set to waste no time in preparing for the 2024/25 campaign.
