The cheapest places to buy fuel in Merseyside this weekend

The cheapest place in Merseyside to fill up your car is at a Morrisons garage in Knowsley.

According to the latest figures provided by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £3.41 filling up at this yard compared to the most expensive petrol station. The Morrisons garage in Irlam Drive, Kirkby is charging drivers 139.7 per litre, meaning it would cost £76.84 to fill a 55 liter tank.

This is based on a live petrol price feed which was set up by the government’s Competition and Markets Authority last September. The RAC wrote to Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho this week calling for “significant action” against fuel retailers who charge too much for petrol and diesel.

It comes as margins made by retailers have recently risen to 16p per liter for diesel and 11p per liter for petrol. Margins are around 8p per liter higher than five years ago as a fall in the price of oil has led to a drop in wholesale fuel prices.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “We believe the current margins charged by larger retailers, in particular, are grossly unfair to motorists struggling to make ends meet in the cost of living crisis.”

The average price for a liter of petrol in the Merseyside region this week is 139.5p.
