Premier League: Manchester United are making a move to sign Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite

However, United are reluctant to pay the Merseyside club’s asking price, with Everton wanting at least £70m for the England international, which would be approaching a world record fee for a centre-back.

United hope to start their rebuilding summer job by bringing in Branthwaite following the departure of Raphael Varane, who was released on a free transfer out of contract.

Manager Erik ten Hag, who is in talks over a new contract, believes defensive injuries are a major reason why United have struggled so much in the 2023/24 season. All five senior centre-backs have spent spells on the sidelines, while youngster Willy Kambwala and midfielder Casemiro have filled in.

Branthwaite, who has been fit throughout Everton’s 2023/24 season, also represents a younger generation than Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, who will both enter the final year of their respective contracts, and the departed Varane.

However, Everton believe Branthwaite’s nationality, a left-hander, and age, at just 21, mean he is particularly valuable. They noted the £80m price tag United paid for Maguire in 2019, along with the £77m fee commanded by Josko Gvardiol in the summer of 2023 and the £70m cost of Wesley Fofana in 2022 and is looking for a similar amount.

But Everton, who have been handed two points deductions in the 2023/24 season, may need to sell players by June 30 to comply with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules, and Branthwaite could collect the biggest sum – even though United’s own FFP concerns might limit their budget. .

United are hoping to wrap up some of their summer business early after new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe took control of football operations. Jason Wilcox, who joined as technical director, plays a major role in recruitment.

Branthwaite made his England debut in June as a substitute against Bosnia and Herzegovina but was not included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024. However, United consider him a player for their future.

United are also looking for a centre-forward, with Ivan Toney, Jonathan David and Joshua Zirkzee all on their shortlist as they look for an alternative to Rasmus Hojlund.

In addition, they will probably look for another defensive midfielder. They are also in talks with Jonny Evans, their longest-serving centre-back, over a new deal.
