British Gas, OVO, EDF and Octopus customers warned to ‘defrost the freezer’

British Gas, OVO, EDF, Octopus and EON Next customers could reduce their bills by £300. A recent survey revealed that homeowners could save nearly £300 each year on their energy bills with a few home improvements.

MoneyMagpie has teamed up with survey holder Smart Energy GB to reveal some energy saving tricks that could cut your bills by hundreds every year. Tips, tricks and tricks for customers and households include using the washing machine less.

Experts have warned customers to wash “less of you and less of your clothes”, with showers reduced from 10 minutes and fewer loads of laundry per week. Customers are also encouraged to air dry their clothes instead of hanging them in the tumbler.

Households should also use timers and maximize battery usage. Customers are also being told to make sure they purge their radiators to maximize efficiency and to stop using standby mode as well. A study by the Energy Saving Trust revealed (with figures updated by British Gas) huge costs for ‘vampire appliances’ such as a microwave costing £16.37 a year, washing machine £4.73 pounds and electric showers £9.80 each year on standby only.

Customers were also warned to defrost their freezers. As your freezer builds up ice over time, not only is the space available to you reduced, but the appliance is less efficient, experts have warned, as the cost of living crisis continues up and down the country.

They explained: “When the freezer is defrosted, it fills the gaps in the shelves and drawers with ziplock bags filled with water. When you need space, remove the bag. Freezers are more efficient when full than empty, so fill the empty space. like this helps improve its effectiveness.”

Some freezers even come with a built-in defrost mode for when it looks too frosty in there, with many available from brands like AO.
