Tony Smith is one of the most important managers in the history of Leeds Rhinos. He joined the club in 2004 and led them to a first Super League title that year, ending a long wait to lift the game’s biggest prize. It was also the first of many titles lifted by the club’s Golden Generation.

The club couldn’t be further from it at the moment as they fell to a demoralizing defeat against Hull FC. Hull were 11 games winless in all competitions and Leeds, coming off a home win against Castleford Tigers, needed to record a comfortable win against the West Hull side.

Smith’s nephew Rohan Smith is the current Rhinos head coach and now faces significant pressure surrounding his role at the club. Tony Smith, who covered the game as part of Sky’s pundit team, had mixed loyalties in the game, having recently left his position as head coach at FC.

Speaking after the game, Smith offered his opinion on whether Leeds were ready to challenge for Super League honors again. Smith offered a pessimistic outlook for the club’s immediate future.

When asked if he believes Leeds’ current league position is a fair reflection of their performances so far this season, Smith agreed. Smith stated that while Leeds do not currently have a squad capable of competing in the top flight of Super League, they should be patient with their current set-up. He said:

“Yeah, I wouldn’t agree with that either. You know, that’s probably where I am at this stage. And do they want to be one and two in two or three years? And is it likely to last that long? I think so, you know, to evolve into it.

“Are the people in the stands that patient? Sometimes not. Are hiring and firing people patient? That’s the biggest question. Smith said,

I think Gary Hetherington has done it over the years, but until he finds the right one.”

Smith added: “Some of that was circumstances that came up where he had to make those changes. But hopefully he felt, you know, I’m not just saying this because he’s my nephew.

“He’s hoping he has the right coach and he’ll put his faith in them and support him. Otherwise, if you continue to make the change and hopefully it has figured out that it has made enough changes to find the right one. There are no guarantees until you work it out, but when you find the right one, you know it too. You kind of know.”
