Gary Hetherington enters the dressing room as Rohan Smith turns up late for media duties

Leeds Rhinos’ season went from bad to worse today. The Rhinos have been inconsistent throughout the Super League season, while still doing enough to remain in contention for the top six. The latest defeat against Hull FC is a new low for a side struggling for consistency with pressure on Rohan Smith.

The defeat also increases the pressure on head coach Rohan Smith. Smith faced calls to leave during a run of poor performances from Leeds fans, particularly after their last game at Hull FC, which they won 18-12.

After the match, the Rhinos coach did not immediately report to Sky Sports for his post-match media duties. The Rhinos squad and Smith all went straight into the Leeds dressing room and were reportedly joined by Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington.

Smith eventually joined Jenna Brooks’ pitching team to address Leeds’ lackluster performance.

Following the Leeds defeat, Sky Sports reported the news that Grahy Hetherington walked straight into the Leeds dressing room after the defeat. Brian Carney said:

“Now we’re pitchside here at the MKM Stadium and the players who have finished the game here, the players, the coaches and stuff, are usually doing their media duties and normally you’d see an opposition team scrambling. I haven’t been able to see any.

Brooks then reported that Smith did not come out to the media immediately and was joined by the entire team and Hetherington in the dressing room. Brooks said:

“I’m still waiting for Rowan Smith to come in for his post-match interview. I can tell you the conclusion of this game of this defeat for Rhinos, Rohan and all his players went straight into the dressing room and closed the door.

No one came out. I can tell you though that someone has come in. Gary Hetherington, chief executive of Leeds Rhinos, came down from the boardroom and into the dressing room.

That’s all I can tell you right now, that’s all we know, but I’m going to try to get to the bottom of this and find out exactly what’s going on in the Leeds Rhinos dressing room.”

When Smith eventually spoke to Sky Sports, he blamed a series of errors for Leeds’ defeat. He believed his side let Hull FC loose, handing the ball over too easily throughout the game. Smith said:

“Too many back-to-back errors, so the opportunities, the opportunities that would present themselves, we were rolling and creating enough runs. We didn’t capitalize and apply enough pressure long enough.”

Addressing Hetherington’s visit to the dressing room after the game, Smith said it was important to stick together in difficult times and that Hetherington had come to share that moment with the team after the game as a sign of solidarity.

“I think it’s important after, you know, especially after disappointing performances, that you come together and stick together and talk about how to get through it and the importance of this week coming up and not compounding our mistakes by playing with no confidence. it doesn’t matter what the score or the situation is and we stick together.

I think it’s important to spend those moments together after the game.”

Asked if he thought he would have the confidence of incoming sporting director Ian Blease, Smith expressed his belief that they would develop a good working relationship.

“Look, Ian and I had a very casual conversation after he had just done the media rounds and had a look around the building. So Ian and I will get to know each other and talk about how things are now, and Ian will no doubt have some thoughts on how to make things better.”
