Stephen Merchant has been banned from the menswear store for life

Stephen Merchant, one of Bristol’s biggest celebrities, has admitted he was banned from a menswear store for life – after criticizing their oversized clothing.

The 49-year-old co-creator of hit BBC shows ‘The Office’ and ‘The Outlaws’, who stands at 1.8m 7in, received the boot from clothing chain High and Mighty, which specializes in UK-based clothing for tall and/or wide men – after making some less than flattering remarks in an interview with Time Out.

And he only learned of the ban when a costume department worker, shopping on his behalf, told a shopkeeper: “I’m buying them for an actor.”

Stephen recalled the incident to the Sunday Express, saying: “The woman behind the counter said: ‘Which actor?… ‘Is it him?'” before pulling out the interview and declaring: “She took out a copy of the film. Time Out and said, ‘We don’t sell her clothes.'”

The anecdote is just one of several the actor has shared recently, according to the Mirror. Appearing on US show Late Night With Seth Meyers last week, Stephen told how his cunning plan to avoid being mugged in London comically backfired.

He told how when he first moved from Bristol to London he used to carry three wallets around, two of which were decoys in case of robbers. However, his cunning plan backfired when a thief demanded his phone.

Recalling the incident to Seth Meyers, he joked, “They were leaving and I said, ‘Do you want a wallet?'”

Adding further to his streak of humorous mishaps, Stephen revealed during his latest stand-up special an awkward occasion where he misinterpreted a woman’s intentions.
