England head coach Shaun Wane singled out Super League sides Leigh Leopards and Salford Red Devils for praise, the two sides who won Academy licenses in May.

Recruitment is a massive factor in building success in Super League and both sides have been successful in this, with star signings such as Tom Amone and Brodie Croft being among the best signings in Super League over the last decade, however the catch is also , massive.

Now that both teams have been granted academy licences, they will be able to develop their own stars who they can then retain and move forward for further success in the Super League.

There is a reason why only four teams have won Super League and why two of those teams in St Helens and Wigan Warriors continue to dominate the sport and that is because they are able to develop their own stars of the future through the academy system.

After the RFL Board granted both Salford Red Devils and Leigh Leopards three-year Academy licenses in May, they will potentially be set up for future success and Shaun Wane has claimed this could translate into success for the team national.

Speaking to The Sportsman on their Youtube channel about a variety of things following the announcement of the England v Samoa series at the end of the season, Wane singled out both sides for their recent momentum.

“It’s a credit to them,” he claimed, before explaining how it will help every Super League team as well as England in the long run.

He continued: “They’ve got some good young players in their areas as well, but there’s no doubt the success we’ve had at Wigan has been through our kids coming through the system.

“Although we’ve always had good players from overseas, going and hugging George Williams when you’ve won a cup, someone who’s been with you since you were 13 and 12, it’s really, really nice.

“That will create that. We want people coming into our system to understand what we’re about, and having this accreditation, which they have now, will make the game that much stronger.”

Both Salford and Leigh are fighting for the Super League play-offs this season and could be fighting for a single place, however, news that their academy license will be granted means they will potentially be set to remain a team top six for at least the next three years.

The licenses were recommended by Paul Prescott, who said: “Both clubs have shown they have listened to RFL feedback in 2021 and shaped their application to address previous concerns. The link between the RFL and both clubs from 2021 was clearly visible and resulted in strong and clear applications.”
