Drunk woman hit, punched and tried to bite officers

A woman who got drunk before going to her ex-partner’s house to ask for money ended up attacking police after they tried to stop her from injuring herself by headbutting her in the road. Leicestershire Police were called to Julian Road in Glen Parva at around 5.30pm on Monday 27 May.

Amanda Andrews, 52, drank to ‘Dutch guts’ before going to her ex-partner’s house to ask for money to help her 24-year-old daughter pay off her gambling debts of around £15,000. Leicester Magistrates’ Court heard on Wednesday, June 12, that Andrews could not remember what happened next.

Prosecutor Adeel Zafar told magistrates: “Police attended a report of a woman who came forward at her ex-partner’s address. The defendant was extremely drunk and was shouting in the street.

“He told the officers to move away. She was unsteady on her feet, threw herself into the middle of the road and refused to get up, causing a vehicle to stop.”

He said Andrews began hitting her head on the road and when officers rushed to stop her from injuring herself, she began throwing punches at them. Most of the shots missed, but one hit a police officer in her shoulder.

Andrews, of Aylestone Lane, Wigston, was handcuffed. Mr Zafar said: “She still refused to get up and continued to be aggressive and abusive and resist the officers.” He said the officers lifted Andrews off the ground to take her to a police van, and as they did, she punched another police officer in the stomach.

Because of how drunk Andrews was, the police decided they should take her to the hospital. Mr Zafar said that when they arrived at Leicester Royal Infirmary, she “continued to cause disturbances”.
