Newcastle United confirm Anthony Gordon Australia’s decision after he missed the win at Brentford

Anthony Gordon has been ruled out of Newcastle United’s post-season trip to Australia after picking up an Achilles injury at Manchester United in midweek.

Gordon was ruled out of Sunday’s 4-2 win over Brentford and while his teammates all left the Gtech Community Stadium and headed straight for the airport, the winger will remain on Tyneside for treatment ahead of the European Championship from this summer.

England boss Gareth Southgate was in attendance at Brentford on the final day of Premier League action as Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Nick Pope were introduced. Now he will keep a close eye on Gordon’s injury as he prepares to name his 26-man squad for the summer.

Speaking after the end of the season, Eddie Howe said: “Anthony is not going to Australia. He had a scan very soon after the Manchester United game – we don’t think it’s a serious injury, but it’s enough to keep him out of Australia today as well.

“I think everyone who is here today will travel. Unless there are twists and turns or late twists, I think it will be everyone who is here today and that is every fit player at the club.”

Gordon appeared to be injured when he was fouled by Sofyan Amrabat in Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford. The incident was a major moment of controversy after Newcastle were not awarded a penalty, with Gordon bemoaning the lack of a VAR decision in his post-match media duties.

Newcastle took all three points without the 23-year-old on Sunday, securing seventh place in the process. The Magpies must now wait until Saturday’s FA Cup final to find out if they have done enough to earn a place in the Europa Conference League for next season.
