First photo of selfish 115mph driver who killed woman en route to Birmingham airport

This is the face of a selfish driver who caused the death of a woman on the M42 by driving at 115mph. Mohammed Asif hit the Audi Q7 with the back of a Skoda in lane one of the northbound carriageway as both vehicles approached Junction 6 where they were about to exit.

Marzena Kaczorowska had been a passenger in the latter car and was on her way to Birmingham Airport. The 53-year-old was due to fly to her native Poland to see her family for the first time in more than a year.

But she tragically died from catastrophic head and chest injuries two weeks after the accident. Asif, 47, was on his way home to Coventry but had no reason to rush.

Six months after the incident, he was caught drunk. At Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday June 13 he was jailed for nine years and banned from driving for ten years after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

The collision happened at around 2.50am on 3 September 2022. Dashcam footage from another driver showed Asif speeding on the M42. The witness repeatedly exclaimed “oh shit” when the crash happened moments later.

The impact left the road with debris and caused Asif’s Audi to flip onto its roof. Ms Kaczorowska was driven from her home in Worcestershire to the airport by her partner of more than 21 years, Wlodzimierz Najmul.

He said: “On the day of the collision I was taking Marzena to the airport to see her family in Poland, which was extremely emotional for her. She hadn’t seen them for a year and they really missed one the other. Seeing her family brought much happiness.

“This is a journey that changed my life forever. Out of nowhere we were hit by a speeding car. The medical staff worked hard to stabilize Marzena in hospital for 14 days before her body could no longer fight . Her injuries were too severe. I was there to watch her die while her life support was turned off. No one should see that.”

He also described how Mrs Kaczorowska was proud of her house and garden. He said they enjoyed traveling to National Trust sites in England and were both “huge” Aston Villa fans.

Asif had gone out with a friend and dropped her off at her home in Birmingham before returning to his own address in Coventry via the M42. Six months later, on March 12 last year, police were called after a BMW crashed into two parked cars.

A canine unit attended and information led them to a nearby Ramada hotel, where Asif was found slumped in a chair in the foyer, holding his car keys. He later blew readings of 106 and 98 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath against the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

Prosecutor Tom Walkling said Asif showed a “callous disregard for the safety of others” in relation to his driving on the M42. He added that he “failed to learn the lessons” of the fatal drink-driving crash months later, for which he was sentenced separately. Asif is a father of six who has 17 previous convictions for 40 offences, including conspiracy to manufacture a Class B drug for which he was jailed for six years.

Antonie Muller, defending, said his client had a “limited memory” of the M42 incident. He suggested Asif may have been undecided between getting behind the Skoda to exit at junction 6 or accelerating to overtake it, as well as two HGVs in front.

He said, “He doesn’t know. His fault is that he gave himself very little time to make his decision because of the speed at which he was traveling.”

The lawyer added that Asif was sorry for the accident and was “severely emotionally affected”, which led him to turn to alcohol and commit the subsequent drink-driving offence. Judge Francis Laird KC was unimpressed as he concluded the defendant had given “no explanation” for why he was driving so fast.

He said: “To have committed the offense (drink driving) so soon after the tragic events involving Marzena and her partner says a lot about your true character and reveals your attitude to the rules of the road that you have to follow we all respect”.
