People who have “less than £6,000 in the bank” will receive a free cash payment of £500

Households struggling with the cost of living can receive a £500 free cash payment straight away. This is done through the Brent Resident Support Fund (RSF).

Set up by the government, the fund was expanded earlier this year by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and with it came new funding, reports BirminghamLive. It’s aimed at those over 18 with less than £6,000 in the bank.

Brent Council has confirmed it is for those who need help paying their food and utility bills. The Resident Support Fund can cover major household expenses such as food and utility bills and Council Tax arrears.

The council also said it can also cover rent arrears if you are not already on housing benefit or universal credit. Those who receive Housing Benefit or Universal Credit can already claim a discretionary housing payment).

The fund also covers white goods if you’ve moved into a new, unfurnished, rented property. But there is a limit on £400 white goods support. It may also cover counseling and mental health services or access to the internet, a laptop, or both.

The charity said you will need to apply for this using the Resident Support Fund Digital Form. It can also help pay for energy and water essentials including soap, sanitary products, winter clothing, blankets, boiler service/repairs and also cover paying off debt eg credit card loans. People will be referred to the credit union for an interest-free loan.
