But what about the other half of the roof, Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale wanted to know with one of his questions for Director General of Planning, Development and Recreation James Fawthrop?

“I want to make sure that we make the roof of the civic complex solar-ready for the future,” the mayor also said.

Fawthrop explained that the current project is to replace half of the roof membrane this year; he said another tender for the other half of the work would likely be budgeted next year.

“(Nothing in the work) will prevent us from considering solar in the future,” Fawthrop told the mayor.

The first half was awarded to Toronto contractor Proteck Roofing and Sheet Metal at a total bid price of $974,368; seven bids were received and opened through the purchase of services in mid-May.

The project involves providing all labor, materials and tools for the removal of the existing roof system and the installation of a new specified roof system and related components. The total area is approximately 2,695 square meters (29,000 sq ft) and makes up half of the roof of the arena.

Earlier in the meeting, as part of council’s mass approval, the reconstruction of First Street and Lawrence Avenue was awarded to Cornwall Gravel Company Ltd. at a total bid price of $2,708,763. The work involves the complete reconstruction of First Street East from Marlborough Street to Lawrence Avenue, including approximately 126 meters of storm sewer, 126 meters of sanitary sewer and 139 meters of sewer.

It also includes the reconstruction of Lawrence Boulevard from Montreal Road to Second Street East, including approximately 144 meters of storm sewer, 308 meters of sanitary sewer and 378 meters of main sewer. The capital project also includes landscape restoration and planting of new trees. Four bids were received and opened by purchase of services a few weeks ago.

Council also approved a temporary closure of Pitt Street from Third to Second streets on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., in support of the United Way Centraide SDG. United Way Centraide SDG is hosting its second annual Over the Edge fundraising event, where participants will abseil in front of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. from 202 Pitt St.
