Leeds United centre-back Max Wöber had a moment to forget as Austria looked to hold off France, scoring an own goal to break the deadlock.

Leeds have a representation to watch in the current European Championships, one being Liam Cooper and two others on the books who have spent 23/24 on loan.

One of those is Max Wöber, who started for Austria in their opener with the tough task of trying to put France away.

Watch: Max Wöber scores an own goal screamer against France

Trying to keep track of this current France squad is easier said than done given the talent Didier Deschamps has at his disposal.

Leading the line as captain is Kylian Mbappe, and the breakthrough moment came in the 38th minute when he picked up a loose ball down the right channel before weaving past the defender to send a cross into the six-yard box.

At the end of the cross was Wöber, but his bizarre header went into the bottom corner of his own goal:

Happy to have Aaronson back?

The ITV panel unleashed Max Wöber against France at Euro 2024

As the teams went in at half-time, Austria were no doubt frustrated that they were not equal, let down by the Leeds man, who has spent the season in Germany.

The ITV panel for the match consisted of the unforgiving Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Ian Wright – all unanimously baffled by the Austrian centre-back.

“It’s a mess in the middle,” Neville said first.

Host Laura Woods asked what was so wrong with the defence, to which Keane replied:

“I think he just sprinted, he just needs to slow down a bit, obviously it’s a decent ball in the box but it’s very poor defending.

“Everybody will say it’s a bit unlucky, you’ve just got to slow down and get his body position right, when you get him at that angle there’s a good chance he’s going to end up in your own net.

“Very poor defense.”

Wright then added, trying not to laugh at the flashpoint:

“It’s almost like he’s not looking at the ball, if the ball comes over you’ve got to look at it, he’s not looking at where it’s going to go. Crazy.”

Neville then concluded:

“When a ball is pushed and you know it’s meeting, you have to settle, if you’re in motion you end up doing all these things.”

A chance to make amends for Wöber did not come as he was subbed off around the hour mark with the score still 1-0 to France.

The shop window has not been kind to Max Wöber here

Many Leeds fans saw Wöber in the line-up and hoped for a very good performance, for two reasons.

The first being that he could have a transfer audition to make himself more valuable to suitors, the second being that he could convince fans that he deserves to be brought back.

However, none of that is helped by that first-half shocker, booked for a lightning foul and then inexplicably heading for his own goal.
