Three plants expert says you need to check if they are in your garden

Experts said there are three plants people need to look out for this summer if they have them in their gardens.

Pruning is a crucial gardening task that can bring significant benefits to almost all plants. June is not only a time to enjoy your garden, but also to complete essential gardening tasks.

Pruning promotes plant health, encourages new growth and ensures a vibrant garden, especially with summer on the horizon. However, it is important to note that not all plants should be pruned in June, as incorrect timing can adversely affect the plant’s growth and its ability to produce fruit and flowers.

By properly timing pruning activities, gardeners can optimize the benefits for each plant, reports the Express.

Plants to cut in June.

1. Weigela

Gardening experts at Hillier suggest that weigela should be cut back slightly after flowering.

Flowering stems should be cut below the flowers, and some older stems may need to be cut back to the ground.

If the plant is still blooming, gardeners should wait until it finishes.

Some modern varieties will continue to bloom into autumn and require no pruning apart from a late winter shaping.

2. Sweet peas

Sweet peas are a favorite among gardeners and these delicate flowers will benefit from a light plum in June, according to Nigel Lawton, plant buyer at Dobbies Garden Centre.

He advised: “Once established, sweet peas will happily climb on their own, but it’s important to keep cutting back spent flowers to encourage continued flowering.”

If sweet peas grow too tall, gardeners can cut the top of the main vine just above a shoot or bud.

3. Roses

Some types of roses can be pruned once they have finished blooming in June.

To keep your roses blooming, Nigel recommends regular deadheading, which not only cleans up the plant but also encourages healthy growth – a sentiment echoed by Monty Don.

Nigel also advised: “Feeding roses with a special rose fertilizer and adding a layer of mulch will also help support new blooms.”

The expert suggested that June, being rose season, is “a good time to introduce new varieties and colors into your beds and borders to maximize your summer display”.
