Analyze

That visit from Liverpool at the end of August is reminiscent of Erik ten Hag’s first season, when an unlikely 2-1 win on a packed evening at Old Trafford saved his difficult start to life as United manager.

Things haven’t gotten much easier since then and Ten Hag will be hoping they don’t once again go into that game needing a positive result to escape the early pressure.

United’s first tournament isn’t too bad, although trips to Selhurst Park and Villa Park either side of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit arrive just as the extended Europa League campaign gets under way.

The Ten Hag’s side will visit the Etihad Stadium just two weeks after returning from the Emirates in December, but meetings with the rest of the so-called ‘big six’ are never back-to-back and mostly spread out.

United’s final pair of games could, however, be crucial against two other clubs whose ambition will be Champions League qualification.

If this is still in play by the time United travel to Stamford Bridge on the penultimate weekend and Aston Villa visit on the final day, it will at least be an improvement on last season.

Key dates for the 2024-25 season

The transfer window officially opened on Friday 14 June, with the infamous deadline for the 2023-24 Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) reporting period coming at the end of the month on 30 June. The window closes on Friday 30 August at 23:00 BST (18:00 ET).

The winter transfer window will open on Wednesday, January 1, closing on Monday, February 3.

The new Premier League season kicks off on the weekend of August 16-18, a week after the Community Shield. That game will be another Manchester derby and a replay of last season’s FA Cup final.

The Premier League season ends on Sunday, May 25, when all 10 games will be played at the same time.

Premier League clubs will enter the FA Cup in the third round, which starts on Saturday 11 January. The Carabao Cup will begin in mid-August, with Premier League teams not playing in Europe going into the second round and the remaining seven clubs receiving a bye to the third round.

The newly expanded Champions League, meanwhile, kicks off on September 17. The Europa League starts on September 25 and the Conference League starts on October 3.

What about the Europa League?

Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph last season secured Europa League football for next campaign.

Next season’s Europa League will be the first under a new format as all three of UEFA’s club competitions undergo a revamp.

The Europa League group stage will become a single stage of the 36-team league. Each team plays eight different teams – four home and four away – and the top eight automatically advance to the last 16. The 9th to 24th face off in an elimination round play-off to determine the remaining last 16 teams.

The Europa League final takes place at the San Mames stadium in Bilbao.
