Andre Savelio escapes suspension after red card on Huddersfield Giants debut

Andre Savelio had to wait quite a while for his debut with Huddersfield Giants and he certainly won’t be forgotten in a hurry. The forward was sent off during his first appearance in pure and gold following a challenge on Hull KR captain Elliot Minchella.

The striker was just 70 minutes into his Huddersfield debut after moving to West Yorkshire from Hull FC in the off-season. Illness and injury kept him out until Friday when the Giants visit Craven Park.

His red card appeared to put another stop to his Giants career. However, this did not prove to be the case as the 29-year-old avoided suspension for the incident.

He had essentially been dismissed for a dangerous throw on Minchella, having put him on the head. It was a rather bizarre incident that was not seen often. However, on reflection, the Match Review Committee considered that the incident had been sufficiently referred.

In minutes released by the Rugby Football League, an explanation was given to explain why they deemed the incident unworthy of further action. The minutes read: “The opponent faces a player who is off balance and the opponent gets into a dangerous position. Enough sending.” As a result, Savelio will be free to play for Huddersfield this weekend when they head to France to face Catalans Dragons.

Four players were charged by the Match Review Committee, two of whom were suspended. Both are from London Broncos, with Ethan Natoli and Rhys Kennedy both receiving one-match bans for dangerous contact. Castleford Tigers duo Cain Robb and Jacob Miller were fined £250.
