New driving license rule means drivers will find themselves with ‘points they didn’t know about’

Drivers are slapped with points on their license for breaking a DVSA rule they were unaware of. Learner drivers who have just passed their test and received their license start their driving life already burdened with penalty points after breaking the rules during their learning period.

Clearview Driving has issued a warning that learners could face fines and points before they even pass their test. In a TikTok response to a driver’s question, “Sorry, this might be a stupid question, but what if a learner is speeding and the speed camera catches them?” and “Does the learner pay the fine?” the road safety group explained: “Did you know you can get points on your provisional licence. So when you’re driving with your family or with an instructor, if you happen to pass a speed camera where you’ve exceeded the speed limit or a traffic light where is it? a camera, they’ll get a letter in the mail asking who was driving at the time.”

They added: “They’ll have to give you the details so be careful when you’re in town.”

Adrian Flux from the Learner Driver Hub chimed in, stating: “Learner drivers are not exempt from speeding fines and penalties; they must follow the traffic rules. If a learner driver is caught speeding while under surveillance, they will be fined. and points on their license, not you.”

“If the car they use belongs to the supervisor, that person will receive the letter. In this case, you can respond and name the learner as the person who was driving at the time of the offence,” reports Birmingham Live.

One TikTok user warned: “Yeah I didn’t know that until my driving instructor told me when I went (through) an amber light before it turned red lol I was just learning and that was my start “.
