“He can’t unscrew his head” – insisted the Leeds United player, but the transfer vultures smell blood

Maximilian Wöber will return to Leeds United after spending a season on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Gladbach were keen to extend the Austrian international’s stay, but Bild say they are not prepared to pay the €15m fee demanded by Leeds.

The centre-back went out on loan because he didn’t want to play in the Championship and the report says he is keeping that position.

Wöber and Leeds hoped he would improve his rating by impressing at the Euros.

His plan has not gone well so far as the 28-year-old scored an own goal in Austria’s 1-0 defeat by France on Monday. The Leeds man, who was booked in the first half, was on the pitch for 59 minutes. Bild suggest he was dropped after a poor performance.

This pleased the Bundesliga side as their director Roland Virkus is still trying to bring the defender back to the club.

Meanwhile, Austria manager Ralf Rangnick has come to Wöber’s defense.

“No one, no one blames Maxi. It was a very unfortunate situation that he was sitting right there at the time – he can’t even unscrew his head.” he said.

Austria and Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Patrick Pentz also backed the Leeds man.

“Mbappé’s ball in the middle was very sharp – you can’t blame Max for that. Things like that just happen.” Pentz explained.

German transfer vultures are pleased with Wöber’s apparent failure as they believe it means Leeds United will have to forego the €15m. However, it is far too early in the Euros to be so confident about this and hopefully things will change.
