Horror accident in Sutton where moped died, police watchdog involved

A horror crash in which a moped died in Sutton has been referred to the police watchdog.

The rider of a moped was found injured following a crash with a police car in Wrythe Lane at 4.45pm yesterday (June 17).

He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Police inquiries are ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the incident had been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and the Professional Standards Directorate.

Two officers in the squad car were taken to hospital for further treatment with minor injuries.

The police car was on routine patrol and was not responding to an emergency call before the accident.

Police say the incident was not a pursuit and the car’s blue lights and sirens were not working.

Wrythe Lane was closed as the incident was dealt with by police but has since reopened.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “At around 4.45pm on Monday 17 June, a marked police car collided with a moped in Wrythe Lane, junction with Erskine Road, Sutton.

“London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance attended.

“Despite their best efforts, a man, the rider of the moped, died at the scene. Work is ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin.

“Two officers in the squad car were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“The moped was not being followed by the police car at the time of the collision – the blue lights and sirens were not working.

“Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

“Road closures remain in place at the location.

“As is routine in such circumstances, the Professional Standards Directorate has been informed.

“A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
