Sheffield Wednesday and QPR interest in £1.8m As Played Down

Sheffield Wednesday and Queens Park Rangers are just two clubs who have registered an interest in Rotherham United defender Cameron Humphrys, according to reports.

It was revealed by Football Insider two weeks ago that the Owls and QPR are keen to win the race for the 25-year-old this summer, but they have also been joined by fellow Championship side Swansea City for the centre-back.

Sheffield Wednesday target ‘Will not come cheap’ this summer

Despite Rotherham’s relegation to League One last season after picking up just 27 points in 46 Championship games, Humphreys has been one of the Millers’ best performers, so there is a battle to keep him in the second level of England next season.

However, speaking of the rumored interest from clubs in the division above, Rotherham boss Steve Evans admitted he is not aware of any intrigue from Championship sides in the centre-half, as he made a tongue-in-cheek joke at his expense Sheffield Wednesday (quotes from the Rotherham Advertiser):

“If it’s mentioned with Wednesday, then I’m not surprised if it’s also mentioned with Thursday and Friday.

“Cameron has been very good for me in the three games he has played but we are not aware of any interest from any club.”

Humphreys still has twelve months left on his contract at the New York Stadium, while the defender boasts a market value of between £1m and £1.8m, according to FootballTransfers. Any suitors will have to pay a handsome fee to get his signature this summer.

The writer’s vision

It was no surprise when it emerged two weeks ago that Sheffield Wednesday, Queens Park Rangers and Swansea were hoping to secure Humphreys’ services this summer as he appears to be too good to be relegated to League One after some impressive displays in last season in a sinking ship.

However, Evans is adamant that there has been no interest from these clubs. However, the Scot is an experienced manager and there is a chance he will publicly play hardball to ensure the club receive a bigger fee for Humphreys in the coming months.
