Euro 2024: Diogo Jota’s Portugal score in added time to beat Czech Republic

In a game largely dominated by Portugal in the opening exchanges, the two teams went into the break in the Group F match in Leipzig.

However, the Czech Republic, who appointed the goalkeeper of the Reds Vitezslav Jaros on their bench, they took the lead just after the hour through Lukas Provod’s long-range strike against the run of play.

In the reply, Jota was brought on from the bench for his country, although it was an own goal from defender Robin Hranac that saw them level, with Portugal trailing just seven minutes from time.

As the game opened up in the latter stages, both sides traded chances and it was Jota who thought he had beaten Portugal three minutes from time.

The Reds striker found the back of the net after Cristiano Ronaldo’s header hit the bar, although VAR stepped in to rule out the goal for offside in the build-up.

Portugal, however, were not to be denied in the 92nd minute as substitute Francisco Conceicao fired home a free from close range to secure three points.

Jota and his nation will return to action on Saturday when they take on Turkiye in a 17:00 BST kick-off, while the Czech Republic face Georgia at 14:00 BST on the same day.
