Dozens of Cornish place names are always mispronounced

As the debate rages on, many would say the date of the general election is getting boring and the ‘first place block’ will rage on forever – but one issue that divides both locals and visitors to Cornwall is how to pronounce our place names devilishly difficult. You can often tell the difference between a resident and a second home owner by the way they pronounce the beautiful coastal town of Fowey – Foy equals local, Foe-ey equals tourist.

But dozens of other towns and villages have names that may overwhelm even the most knowledgeable of visitors. Heck, it might even have the locals scratching their heads over exactly how it should be said.




It cannot be denied that the phonetic mode does not even approach Cornish in many cases. Meanwhile, with some it’s hard to even know where to start, especially if you’re coming into sight of a road sign for the first time.
