Wigan Warriors star Jai Field is out injured for a long time

Wigan Warriors are set to undergo a testing period as it has been confirmed that full-back Jai Field will be sidelined for an extended period following the injury he picked up in the Challenge Cup final.

After Wigan’s success at Wembley, it was revealed that the Aussie suffered a hamstring injury which saw him miss the side’s narrow win against Castleford Tigers on Friday night.

Matt Peet’s side can now expect to be without Field for several games as the true extent of the injury was revealed by Peet ahead of the club’s game against London Broncos this week.

As revealed on the club’s social media, Peet told the media that the 26-year-old Australian’s return window would be “around six to eight weeks”.

He would also go on to highlight Field’s tenacity and toughness to play through injury, indicating that it meant “how special he was that day”.

Peet noted: “It shouldn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated how special he was that day and it made me realize how hard he played,” before adding: “We’re not going to rush Jai back.”

As such, Wigan Warriors fans can expect to be without Field until early August if the club give Field a long rest, as expected given Peet’s final comments. That would mean he can return in round 22 for the Magic Weekend clash against St Helens.

It’s a devastating blow for Wigan Warriors, but Matt Peet’s side are a team with bigger things on their minds than the next eight weeks as they aim to repeat their Grand Final victory. Making sure Field is back in time for that and doesn’t suffer a setback in his recovery will be among the club’s top priorities now.

As such, this means they will be forced to experiment with the full-back situation and have a number of options. The club started last season with a lot of movement in the spine and that saw French Man of Steel Bevan playing in that role.

French could do so, but that would leave Harry Smith to be partnered with Ryan Hampshire or young star Jack Farrimond, something Matt Peet might avoid doing so as not to put too much pressure on the youngster.

The decision against Castleford Tigers was for Ryan Hampshire to go into the halves with the versatile full-back filling in well, while Bevan French moved to full-back. This causes the problem of moving one of the competition’s best halves into a different role, which limits his impact.

Unfortunately, Wigan lack a replacement full-back and may have to put square screws into round holes, with the likes of Challenge Cup hero Zach Eckerlsey potentially set for a position change.

Alternatively, if Matt Peet does not wish to commit to Hampshire long-term, then the club could make a move in the loan market, with Hull FC’s Jack Walker currently playing in the reserves and likely keen to play first-team rugby in Super League.
