Jurgen Klopp has made his feelings clear about Arne Slot’s “criminal” first game at Liverpool

Arne Slot will begin his career as Liverpool boss with a 12.30pm kick-off – a date his predecessor described as “murder”.

The Reds face newly promoted Ipswich on the opening day of their season and all eyes will be on the Dutchman as he begins a new chapter on Merseyside after nine successful years under Klopp.

But he will have the sympathy of the man he replaces at the helm, as Klopp has previously made it abundantly clear how much he hates kick-offs, referring to it in 2018 as the “breakfast slot”.

In May 2024, he went a step further, describing the Premier League schedule as “absolutely crazy” during a press conference in Liverpool. He added: “I was actually waiting for Amnesty International to go to them.

“I would love to be part of that meeting when someone says, ‘Liverpool 12.30’ and the whole room bursts into laughter. I had a discussion just the other day with colleagues at our favorite TV station, which I will definitely not do. Watch again, TNT.”

Klopp concluded that his view was nothing more than “a bit of advice from an old man on his way out”. He added that asking Liverpool to play “Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday, 12.30pm is murder”.

Slot has been announced as Klopp’s replacement this summer after the German announced he would quit in January. The Dutchman officially became boss on June 1.
