Sheffield Wednesday now in ‘formal talks’ with ‘magic’ player on free transfer

Sheffield Wednesday have now entered into ‘formal talks’ with a ‘magical’ free agent.

Sheffield Wednesday make heavy use of the free agent market in the early stages of the transfer window.

The Owls have already snapped up Ben Hamer and Max Lowe after being released by Watford and Sheffield United respectively.

Wednesday are no strangers to the free market, but they seem to be using it much more wisely this time around.

Danny Rohl’s side are already eager to make their third free transfer of the summer after entering into talks with Ian Poveda.

Sheffield Wednesday are in talks with Ian Poveda

Journalist Alex Miller wrote on X: “You understand that Sheffield Wednesday are in formal discussions with Ian Poveda regarding a free agent move. A Ligue 1 club was also said to have joined the long list of suitors.”

They made it clear on Wednesday that they want to bring the winger back to Hillsborough from his successful loan spell last term.

Poveda is believed to have attracted a lot of interest since leaving Leeds United, so the Owls have a huge challenge in convincing him to return to the club.

Despite Wednesday’s pursuit, Miller has made it abundantly clear that the Yorkshire club are a long way from landing the Colombian.

He added: “A bit confused by the *very* celebratory response to this – there is a way forward. With free agency, normal talk isn’t necessarily an indication that it’s close / even close. But discussions are taking place. Other clubs will play a role.”

Poveda is reportedly wanted by the likes of West Brom and Luton, as well as a host of other Championship – and now Ligue 1 – clubs.

Can the Owls win the race for the Colombian star?

The ‘Magic’ striker does have the pick of the bunch this summer, but will know to watch out as he looks to finally get his career back on track.

Wednesday would certainly have no chance of landing Poveda had he not spent the second half of last season on loan with the club.

However, the Owls could have a secret weapon in Danny Rohl, who could be their only chance to convince him to return this summer.

Considering how important the 24-year-old was before his injury, it would be an exceptional deal if they could sign him on a free.

Their German head coach is likely to have huge pulling power now, but it will come down to whether Poveda is sensible enough to go where he knows he can thrive or whether he takes a risk and joins a club higher up the table , where he could. fight again.
