Peel was arrested the same evening and later charged. Despite denying the offence, he was found guilty following a six-day trial in May this year.

Speaking after the case, Constable Claire McDonald said: “Peel carried out a horrific and depraved sexual assault on a teenage girl and will now face a significant period behind bars.

“He also prolonged his victim’s suffering by denying the offense and forcing her to relive her ordeal in a trial.

“I would like to congratulate her for showing such strength and determination during what has been an extremely traumatic time and we hope that today’s sentence will bring her some sense of justice as she continues to recover.
