Sheffield Wednesday contract talks for ‘major’ player far from ‘dead’

Sheffield Wednesday have been given a boost in their bid to keep hold of an ‘important’ player.

Sheffield Wednesday have already tied Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan to new contracts, while they are still waiting on three more players.

Cameron Dawson looks set to leave the club after 14 years, while Will Vaulks completed a move to Oxford United last week.

Di’Shon Bernard will resume contract negotiations on his return from the Copa America, while it is not yet clear whether Dominic Iorfa will put pen to paper.

Meanwhile, Josh Windass’ future at Hillsborough looks bleak.

After scoring three goals and last three Wednesday games, the club were keen to tie Windass down to a new contract this summer.

Reports initially claimed they were on new terms with the 30-year-old, but things have clearly gone downhill.

Last week it emerged that Windass had rejected the latest contract offer and could now leave the club on a free transfer.

Josh Windass could still stay at Sheffield Wednesday

Although his future is still very much uncertain, The Star have now reported that there is still a possibility that he could stay at Middlewood Road.

The Star wrote: “Reports that he is dead are beyond The Star’s understanding, although there appears to be a lot of work to do to get over the line after talks came close at one point earlier this month.

“It appears that both sides are willing to make a deal, but they need to agree on the vital details. There is interest from several clubs in the Championship and in the US.”

Windass has reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Hull City, Derby County and Coventry City, while Real Salt Lake could be looking to lure him to the MLS.

What the midfielder’s contract situation could mean

The midfielder’s potential exit comes as a much bigger blow after Vaulks has already opted to leave the club.

While he spent much of last season on the sidelines, Windass proved his worth when it came to the final game.

If he does leave the club then it could say a lot about what is going on behind the scenes and begs the question as to what details Windass is having trouble with.
