The Coronation Street-themed tram traveling across Greater Manchester is officially off the rails

A specially themed tram celebrating the greatest television of all time has officially arrived on Metrolink lines today.

And apparently it’s “the most Manc tram ever”.

It is pretty well known at this point that Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is constantly contacted by Coronation Street fans ask where TV The show’s dedicated tram station is – which doesn’t actually exist, by the way – and it’s not helped by the fact that there’s a CGI tram in the program titles and a ‘tram station’ on the soap set.

In fact, after the infamous tram crash in the 50th anniversary episode in 2010, TfGM had almost 300 questions asking if trams were still running in Manchester… really.

Here in the “real world” fans are looking to head to Coronation Street Experience for a special visit to the show’s set, you’ll need to get off at the nearest station, which is IWM North, just a short walk away – but as of today (June 19), that’s all changed now.

That’s because, in true Corrie style, ITV Studios proudly unveiled what it calls “the most Manc Transport ever’ with the launch of the first ‘Coronation Street Experience’ tram.

The unique tribute to the show will meander throughout Metrolink network for the next 12 months.

Created using special images from the Manchester agency, In the meantimethe so-called ‘Insta-trammable’ tram can be seen all decked out in gorgeous pavement artwork to give passengers the change to head to Rochdale through the legendary ‘Rovers doors’, get to Kingsway via Kabin, head to Velopark via Vera and the infamous Jack dressed as ‘No. 9 door’, or rock up at Radcliffe by entering the Roys Rolls.

As summer are taking up residence in our city, the ITV and TfGM crews also briefly snuck into the ‘real world’ earlier today to transform IWM Metrolink station into ‘Weatherfield North’, specifically for the official launch of the themed tram.

“We have our own Weatherfield tram station where our characters catch a handy tram ‘into town’ and even very occasionally we have a virtual tram that goes over our bridge, commented John Whiston, who is the MD. for Continuing Drama at ITV Studios as the tram officially hit the tracks in the region today.

“However, we’ve never ventured onto the Metrolink in Manchester except in fictional form, so it’s exciting that a real tram will have a beautiful Coronation Street livery.”

Mr Whiston added that the purpose of the new themed tram is to show visitors “how easy it is to travel to the Coronation Street Experience on a real tram”.

Urging Mancs and Greater Manchester Pete Sommers, who is TfGM’s Acting Metrolink Network Director, added: “Metrolink, like Corrie, is an iconic symbol of the Greater. Manchester, which has grown from strength to strength over the years, so we’re delighted to be supporting ITV Studios and the Coronation Street Experience.

“Passengers will also have the chance to board the network’s Corrie-themed tram over the coming months, so I would urge people to keep an eye out.”
