The Capital Delivery Service is looking for a Structural Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary team of construction professionals supporting the delivery of a wide range of projects across the council’s capital programme.

Application / Evaluation

Initial assessment of applications will be made via our standard application form, taking into account your relevant skills, knowledge and experience against the specifications set out in the job description. If selected for interview, it will be combined with a technical assessment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have the following attributes/skills in the following areas:

  • Strong design and engineering skills and openness to innovation and improvement.
  • Good standards of literacy and numeracy
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative and also within multidisciplinary design teams.
  • A high degree of technical competence and knowledge of construction.
  • An ability to accurately study and assess existing buildings for structural condition and produce high quality reports on them.
  • Extensive and proven experience of working with architects to design and obtain planning and building control approvals for projects.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk and NBS design software with working knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Essential qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years previous experience in a Structural Engineering role
  • Ideally working towards Chartership with IStructE or ICE.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (preferably experience using Revit Structure and Navisworks)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including preparing reports.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision to deliver projects from inception to completion.

About the Capital Delivery Service

Sheffield City Council has a strong capital building program with an ongoing value of approximately £200 million per annum. To ensure the highest quality standards are achieved, the Capital Delivery Service was created to drive continuous improvements in the performance, pace and quality of the program’s very different projects.

Capital Delivery Service employs over 70 people in a variety of managerial, technical and professional roles and has an in-house multi-disciplinary design team that provides design services for a wide range of construction projects.

The roles and services provided by the Capital Delivery Service include:

  • Office of Capital Program Management
  • Program and project management
  • Cost management
  • Structural and Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical and electrical engineering
  • Architecture
  • Labor Insurance and Project Safety.

The service is a fully transacted service, charging fees for the services it provides and operating as a professional services consultancy within the City Council.

The Service is involved in a wide range of projects under the Capital Programme. The program averages around £200 million per year, with recent and current projects including:

– Secondary and primary schools

– New leisure centers

– Motorways / Bicycles / Pedestrian walkways

– Citywide Flood Mitigation Program

– The Council’s new housing program

– Various Housing Repairs / Council Renovation Programme

– General reconstructions of buildings

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the final grade. If you provide proof of pay that your base pay is higher than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the minimum advantage point within the grade.
