Barnet player-manager Edgar Davids to ‘start the trend’ by wearing the No.1 shirt in midfield

Edgar Davids, the transport organizer for player-manager-captain emergency Barnet supporter, has decided to ditch traditional shirt numbering to ensure everyone is clear about his status at the club, who were relegated from League Two last season. The 40-year-old midfielder who won the Champions League with Ajax and three Serie A titles with Juventus has told goalkeeper Graham Stack he will take the No.1 shirt this season – a move he hopes will turn into a new trend. . Probably among player-managers who need a numerical reminder that they are the boss.

From the Guardian:

After wearing the number 1 during Barnet’s 4-1 friendly defeat by MK Dons on Saturday, Davids told Barnet’s Times newspaper that he had made his own shirt. “This is my number for the season. I’m going to start this trend.”

Barnet goalkeeper Graham Stack, who will wear number 29, told the newspaper: “Team numbers mean nothing to me and I’ve had a few over the years. So it’s not a problem for me. Edgar Davids asked to wear number one, he asked me what number I wanted and I said I didn’t mind.”

Of course, after asking Stack to drop #1, Edgar Davids had to get Edgar Davids’ approval to make the change. But Davids was on the same page as Davids, so it wasn’t a problem.

Next on Edgar David’s agenda: getting league approval to wear captain’s armbands on both his arms and legs, all at the same time.

UPDATE: As DT reader @pkelamis points out, former Greece international Pantelis Kafes (among others) beat Davids to this idea when he played in midfield for AEK Athens.
